LET THE PAST SHINE THROUGH

The Aarhus-based architectural firm CUBO, renowned for its expertise in cultural buildings, fittingly won the competition to design The Old Town's new main entrance. Architect Ralf Wagner shares insights about the project:

"The old entrance was very hidden, even though it is one of the city's biggest attractions. To enhance accessibility, we relocated the main entrance to the Ceres House, allowing visitors to begin their Old Town experience in the present. This adjustment invites you to embark on a captivating journey through time."

HARMONIOUS SURROUNDINGS

"While we reimagined the design, it was crucial to incorporate classic materials like wood, stone, glass, and steel," Ralf explains. "The concept needed to reflect an authenticity in material use. Wherever possible, materials were left untreated, allowing them to naturally rust and maintain a raw aesthetic."

The new entrance building needed to blend seamlessly with its surroundings. Ralf explains: "On closer inspection, you'll notice that the brick paving extends from the terrain into the house itself. Beside the building stands Anton Rosen's pavilion from the early 1900s, which was carefully dismantled, stored, and reconstructed as its neighbour. Its design naturally complements our new entrance."

The concept needed to embrace an authentic connection to the materials.

OPENNESS WITHOUT OVERHEATING

A central theme of the project was 'openness', evident in both the materials selected and the final design, featuring steel columns and expansive glass sections. Ralf explains: "To preserve this openness, we had to incorporate screens. Without them, the windows would need to be heavily tinted to shield against sun exposure and overheating. We avoided any tinted glass, opting instead for the clearest glass available."

Ralf explains the sun shading requirements: "We needed screens that could span a specific width, and only two manufacturers met this criterion. The screens also had to endure the wind typical of this flat landscape, where both wind and sunshine are common. Quality was paramount, leading us to involve Fischer in the process."

At Fischer, our industry expertise enhances projects such as The Old Town and its visitor experience. We are delighted to have collaborated with the talented team at CUBO to create this new gateway to the past.
